FHS National Spanish Honor Society Reads With 1st Graders

Last year FHS National Spanish Honor Society advisor Jeanie Iovino was brainstorming with the club’s officers about a way to serve the Fife Latina community.  This desire has bloomed into a fabulous program in which the club’s members read each week with a kindergarten or first grade ”little buddy” from Discovery Primary School.   The club works with Lisa Matson, first grade teacher, to match up eager kindergarten and first grade students with an honor society member.

The younger children ride the school bus to the high school each week and are greeted enthusiastically by their “big buddy” who reads to, and with, them.  They also have an informal snack and play organized games together.  This program has helped the first graders to become more engaged in their reading at school and allows for someone to read text in Spanish and in English with them; thus building their language skills in both their home and second language.

Enjoy the slideshow below and the faces will show how much both groups enjoy this weekly time of reading!

  1. What a great program! The pictures in the slideshow definitely tell the story as to what the kindergarten, 1st graders and high schoolers are getting from this experience.

!Muy bien! I think this community service project is phenomenal. I bet these kindergarten and first grade students will never forget this experience and I imagine that their high school buddies won’t either :) .

  3. What a lift to my day to view the pictures of the big kids with the little kids. From the facial expressions of all sizes of kids, it appears to me that the giving and the receiving is good for the inner spirit!!!!!
