Words Are Confusing

The following story comes from Annie Sherman’s first grade class.  It is reprinted here with permission of both the student and his mother, who sent the original email to Ms. Sherman.

Hi Ms. Sherman!

I thought you might enjoy hearing about another funny thing Denny said yesterday. He says he’s not embarrassed if I tell you. We talk a lot at home about being silly and being able to laugh at yourself. Yesterday after you told me about Denny talking about literature in class - and after he told me it was litter that you throw in the air and cheer (litter, air, cheer), - Denny told me that Jake had invited him to his birthday party. He told me the party was at a bowling place. Then he asked if it was the same bowling place that Dad works at. I told him that Dad doesn’t work at a bowling place, Dad works at Boeing. He said I know he works at bowling. We talked about how those two words sound a lot alike and then we laughed about it. Denny has been to Boeing a few times and he’s even went right in the hangar and touched the airplanes. Maybe he thought they had bowling alleys hidden somewhere.

It is tricky learning new concepts, including vocabulary!
