Overheard at Discovery Primary
It doesn’t get any better than listening to the voices of our youngest students. Discovery Primary School is home to approximately 570 Preschool – First Grade students.
As these eager learners began their first days here are some of their comments shared by Debbie Hartigan, school counselor:
One student told one of our male teachers, “You smell like my grandpa!”
Another little boy told me, “I was raised with dogs, but my parents aren’t dogs. That makes me part dog!”
Yesterday at recess, one of the duties was standing still putting jump ropes and balls back on the cart after recess. A kindergartener was running in from recess after the bell rang. She ran right into the duty and told the duty “Watch where you are going!”
A little girl was eating lunch at school for the very first time. She asked, “What do we do after we eat?” I told her we go outside to play for recess. She liked that answer. A few minutes later she looked worried and asked, “Do we have to sleep here?”
We had an unexpected fire drill yesterday before the kids knew what one was. One little boy said, “The fire better not burn up my new backpack!”
Also, last year we had an earthquake drill early in the school year. I was in the hallway when an announcement came over the loudspeaker that we were having an earthquake drill. A little kindergarten girl was alone in the hallway, and with a look of terror on her face she said……”What’s an earthqueek!”

Out of the mouths of babes! As a former kindergarten teacher, I continue to marvel at Fife’s ability to know what’s best for kids. Putting our primary students all together in their own building is the most brilliant way to start a young student’s learning career! Not only is it best for the kids, parents can rest easy knowing their child is being taught by the ultimate professional AND the “big kids” are only first graders! : )
