Dr. McCammon Speaks to Local Chamber of Commerce

Dr. Steve McCammon, Superintendent of Fife Public Schools was the guest speaker at the Fife Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on Wednesday, September 3 at the Fife Community Center. He was accompanied by current school board member Mr. Bruce Burnside and former school board member of 18 years Mr. Ron Larson. Mr. Larson is continuing to support the school district as a community navigator for the important local as well as national work of the school district. There were over thirty community and business leaders in attendance.

Dr. McCammon’s presentation was entitled, “Walking the Talk Toward Engaging Every Student”. His focus was upon the fact the even though the district graduated over 99% of all of its seniors last year at or above standard, it still is working on areas of concern in the learning of every child and made the case for why Fife School District is nationally recognized for the system of trust and collaboration that has been built among teachers, administrators, community, students and parents. He also talked about the changing demographics in our district. While the district is pleased with the growing amount of diversity in the district it does present a challenge as we have gone from 5% of our students at Discovery Primary that speak English as a second language six years ago to over 30% today.

He further encouraged the audience to check out the district website for more information on the districts efforts as well as mentioning what great information can be obtained by reading the national case study about Fife entitled “Changing the Quality of Student Experiences: The Fife Way”. This is the type of information the superintendent shares about our school district in those cases where he is invited to speak many times during the year at national conferences and in other school districts about the eight year process that our district has been about.

At the conclusion of the meeting the realtors in attendance were especially complimentary that Fife Schools have a great reputation and that this information will be great to share with prospective home buyers who are already actively pursuing a home in the district greatly due to the quality of our schools.

  1. What an interesting article. In fact, I have taken the time to read all of the posts in the new blog area. My family and I are new to the school district having moved here from Fort Hood mid-summer. This is a nice way to find out what is going on and inportant in the schools. I originally grew up in Tukwila and I am familiar with the school district from many years ago. This is a much better district than I remembered. Many others share this praise that I talk to.

We are so pleased (my husbaND AND i) with not only what we see here but what our neighbors and friends so about how progressive and focused on students this district is. My husband who has family members in education both at the public school and community colleges level calls this district kind of a maverick as you talk about things differently than do most districts around here and certainly from the ones we know for the past several years in Texas. We look forward to following the progress of this work. Is is fairly new? Who else is doing it? Finally I want you to know how great it is that you are embracing your english language learners…and that you have a plan to making those kids successful. We are happy to be here and look to get involved in the pta’s when we get a little more settled. What an impressive school district you have here…we have here:) I agree with the realtor in this article. We had a choice to buy a home in Puyallup, Federal Way or Tacoma and chose Fife after some research. Good call on our part. Keep up the great work…mavericks.

  2. Mrs. Madigan -
Thank you so much for your comments and welcome to the district! It is so encouraging to hear your reactions as a brand new family. We look forward to serving you and your children.

I know that the PTA’s will welcome your involvement. As you will see each school has a link to their PTA/Booster Club on their main webpage.

We have been involved in this work for the past 8 years. We believe it is really making an impact in the type of education and learning experiences we can provide to our students.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me, if I can be of any assistance to you and your family, as you become more acquainted with our district.

  3. Dear Mrs. Madigan-

I would like to thank you as well for posting your comment to our new site. I cannot think of a better message than you have sent that illustrates why we would pursue this communication endeavour. I am also pleased that you have taken the time to read about the significant efforts of our teachers, students and staff.

We take great pride in this district of taking the “path less taken” in our work. I would encourage you to visit often and follow our progess in this work and certainly to get involved in our PTA in the school district. Welcome to Fife and here is to a great school year!

    Steve McCammon
    Superintendent of Fife Public Schools

  4. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the Madigan’s to the district. You made a great choice when selecting the Fife School District area for your new home.

Dr. McCammon many thanks to you and your team for the continued work on engaging all students in the district. I’m proud to say that our children attend school in a district that is forward thinking and always searching for a better way to assist them in learning.

And to Mr. Larson, thank you for sharing the vision when all of this started. Your vision, conviction and dedication to this district and community is much appreciated.
