FBLA Students Shine

Received the following email from Laura Hilzendeger, who along with Christiann Thomas, is the FBLA advisor for FHS.  Thought this news was too good to keep to myself; congratulations everyone!

There is good news to share with all of you regarding what amazing students we have at Fife HIgh School (FHS)!

Christiann Thomas and I took 16 students to teh Washington State Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Conference in Spokane, WA from April 9-11.  The students did a great job representating FHS and FBLA.

JunHo Lee served this past year as the WA State FBLA President. He helped to organize, run, and preside over the FBLA conference for the entire 3 days. He did an awesome job and we should all be proud of his representation at this conference for Fife High, the communitites of Fife and MIlton, and FBLA.  I believe that he even shed a tear or two in his goodbye speech.

We will again this year be making the trip to the FBLA National Conference June 23-29 in Anaheim, CA.  We had four FBLA members qualify to compete at the national level.

  • Jessica Colburn - 1st place in Who’s Who for FBLA
  • Leah Powell - 1st place in Client Service
  • Tierney Kuhn - 1st place in the following 3 events:  Desktop Applications Programming, Economics, and Internet Applications Programming, 2nd place in Databse Design & Applications
  • Nicole McCaffrey - 3rd place in Creed

Jessica, Leah, and Tierney are amazing senior FBLA members who hav eworked very hard over the past three years to achieve excellence and we are so proud of their individual accomplishments and successes in FBLA as well as other areas of their lives.  NIcole is new to FBLA this year and we are so excited for how well sheperformed as a sophomore at the FBLA State Conference.  All four of these girls will be traveling to the national conference and will need to raise approximately $2,800 to cover all of their expenses.  If you know of any organizations that can help us find assistance in these tough economic times please let us know.

As always thanks for your continued support of Fife High School Future Business Leaders of America.

Ms. Laura Hilzendeger, Business Education Department

Congratulations Employees of the Year

Congratulations to our fourteen 2008-2009 District Employees of the Year!  Every spring, each building honors a teacher and/or classified employee for their high quality work.  This collective group truly represents the best of the best - as we feel our district’s staff is second to none!  Each will be honored at a luncheon and at our April Board Meeting, held April 27, where the District Teacher of the Year and District Classified Employee of the Year will be named out of this outstanding group of nominees.

FHS National Spanish Honor Society Reads With 1st Graders

Last year FHS National Spanish Honor Society advisor Jeanie Iovino was brainstorming with the club’s officers about a way to serve the Fife Latina community.  This desire has bloomed into a fabulous program in which the club’s members read each week with a kindergarten or first grade ”little buddy” from Discovery Primary School.   The club works with Lisa Matson, first grade teacher, to match up eager kindergarten and first grade students with an honor society member.

The younger children ride the school bus to the high school each week and are greeted enthusiastically by their “big buddy” who reads to, and with, them.  They also have an informal snack and play organized games together.  This program has helped the first graders to become more engaged in their reading at school and allows for someone to read text in Spanish and in English with them; thus building their language skills in both their home and second language.

Enjoy the slideshow below and the faces will show how much both groups enjoy this weekly time of reading!

CJH Teacher Appointed to National Commission

Congratulations to Keith Hannah, Columbia Junior High business education teacher, who was recently appointed to serve on the National ACTE (Association for Career & Technical Education) Policies Commission for Business & Economics Education for the 2009-2012 triennium!

This commission writes policies that legislators use to gauge program effectiveness and which the National Business Education Association then uses as a basis for national standards and consequently what states use in the development of state and local CTE standards in the area of business education.

There are less than 20 members asked to serve from all across the country who are selected from both secondary and post-secondary levels.

More information about this commission can be found at http://www.nbea.org/curriculum/pcbee.html

Congratulations Mr. Hannah!

Celebrating Our Classified Employees!

Governor Gregoire has proclaimed the week of March 9-13 as Classified School Employee Week, but here in Fife we’re celebrating all month!  (Please see our website for a schedule of socials to be held in their honor.) We are so lucky to have such an amazing group of dedicated support staff throughout our entire district.  Please take a moment to share your appreciation and thanks to a favorite bus driver, cook, office manager, receptionist, maintenance worker, custodian, educational assistant, playground duty, or technology support staff; or thank them as a group! These dedicated staff members help to create the capacity for teachers to do their jobs and for students to succeed.
